The Olfactory Nerve is the first and shortest of the 12 cranial nerves and conveys sensory information related to smell. This sculpture includes a boiling pot of herbs that impart a moist aromatic funk to stimulate the interactor. - mixed media
View of Olfactory Nerve / Enter Through Nostril, a large interactive sculpture mounted on a low wooden wheeled platform. A tall, arching wooden oval covered in heavily hand-dyed and manipulated silk, worked into clusters of bubble-like forms, creates an oversized nostril. Long red silk forms hang inside, suggesting both nostril hairs and the olfactory nerves that pass through the sieve-like structure above. Plants, salvaged wood, vessels, leather, and other found materials surround it. A wood stump inside the nostril provides a seat, allowing a participant to sit within the sculpture while a pot of boiling herbs releases warm, moist aromatic vapor around them.
